SPOUT - Live @ The Exit/In
opening for MCA recording artists:
"Fiction Plane"
NASHVILLE, TN

What an awesome time we had. This stage is the most legendary
stage of true rock and roll in all of Nashville. Anyone who is
anyone has played the Exit / In.
One night a few weeks ago, I'm up at 4 in the morning (as usual) and I
see this MTV "You hear it first" special on a new band from
London, influenced by Nirvana, and the lead singer is Sting's
son. I make a mental note to either download (sue me) or
purchase their cd because I knew I wanted to hear more. Their name
was "Fiction Plane".
So I go to sleep..... wake up to the phone ringing... its Elizabeth, an
entertainment lawyer and friend (who for starters represented and signed
Jimmy Eat World)... asking if I'd like to open up for Fiction
Plane at the Exit/In.
What kind of shit is that!? I was just about to check them out, and now
I'm playing with them?
Skip ahead... its the day before the show... they were just on the Craig
Kilborn show the night before..... Me and Chad and friends meet them at
Tower Records the night before our show..... they're all convinced
they've seen us before or played with us before..... Joe Sumner is the
lead singer. He swears I look very familiar.... I assume
maybe they'd been to our website since it was posted on theirs. ( www.fictionplane.com
)
I give him a Spout CD and he says he's going to put it in the X-Box when
they're on the road.
We meet the next day for the 3 hour pre-show sound check... have a few
laughs as we both start screwing with the stickers on the side stage
door..... changing LIT...... to CLIT. among other
things..... For a few, he'd talk in an American accent, and I'd
talk in a British one (hell, its a habit anyway).....

Long story shorter..... we played..... we opened the show......we had
fun.....the spout peeps were loud as hell...... Joe came out on
stage and said " Great tunes man! Great tunes....." and even
helped us load our equipment off stage. Later in the night
he was singing " She makes love with the radio on"... while I
in turn sang back " We hate people! "..... (which is their
current single , Hate)
The guys from SouthFM (also signed to MCA with their hit "Dear
Claudia")... were at the show. They caught the last two songs
of our set and said they thought it rocked and were given a CD. :)
The night was spent hanging backstage...
drinking for free.....watching Fiction Plane do interviews...
trying to understand how damn nice a band can be.....they are nicer than
90% of the bands we play with around here. It could be because
they are signed..... hell, it could be because they're British.
Who knows..... regardless we all had a great time and the couple I
saw having sex in the men's bathroom after the show had a great time as
well.
Thanks to Brad for coming out last minute and filming it. I have
this show on DVD! How cool is that? :)
