First off, thanks to Natalie and the Buzz for
inviting us to be the first band to be featured on the new
series of live musical broadcasts from the Havana Lounge.
We were really excited about performing live on the air and
Natalie rocks and always does great interviews with us.
She's the one who is prepared ahead of time, even wanting our
set lists by the previous Friday. Organized.
It's a complete honor being the first to do something, but we
took it in the ass hardcore this night. haha!
First off, the sound check. - probably the longest soundcheck
spout has ever done. It just took a long time to get the
vocals thru the monitor at a volume in which you could hear
it. It kept simply not coming thru loud. I blamed
the loud empty room.. They didn't have enough mics or stands to
do the production, so the soundguy asked if I could bring a
microphone and two stands for him to use. (remember this)
We were supposed to play a one hour set at 9pm and go live at
10pm. I show up at 8:45 thinkin' I'm running late, hehe.
There's no-one from the buzz yet. I ask the guy running
sound if they're going to have a separate mix because you can't
just run off the house board, you'll get nothing but vocals on
the air. He said he didn't know. Mind you, now this
is 5 minutes before we're suppose to be playing.
The peeps from the buzz get there and start hooking their
transmitter up and we are told not to worry about playing
yet. It's no big deal, really. I enjoyed chilling
and had fun cutting up. Turns out my neighbor is the bartender
there. Small world!
We play a 5 minute set consisting of "Come and Get It"
and then its go-live time! I kept my amp down, so he would
have room to push me thru the p.a. and out over the air.
When Natalie did her interview with us and asked what we'd be
hearing tonight, I said " ourselves thru these monitors
".... just joking about not hearing our voices coming out
of that monitor even during the interview.
We start off with "Amazing Disgrace". (on the air, you
can hear the instruments during the intro - mainly because its
all highly compressed and much of it is coming thru the vocal
mic out onto the airwaves.)
then when its singing time, its like. you guessed it,.. no
vocals on stage at all. as if that wasn't the crappy
part...on the air, all you hear is the vocals!
The worst combination! hehe
I would say it could have been worse, but eventually it was.
Turns out, the microphone kept completely cutting out on all 3
of our songs. Half the verse would go by before it's back
on. Turns out, the cord wasn't plugged in all the way.
a-ha.
I would say at least it wasn't WORSE, but it was.
You know those two mic stands and the Sm-57 micrphone I let
them use for the production?
The next day they say its no where to be found. One of
them tells me they think our buddies from Fluid Tuesday took it,
and then changes the story to "we were the last to leave,
and we left it on the side of the stage".
